21 November 2020

During ETH Day on 21 November 2020, ETH Zurich appointed Calvin Grieder and Adrian Weiss as honorary councillors. In doing so, the university thanked both of them for their great philanthropic commitment.

Calvin Grieder, who completed his studies in mechanical and process engineering at ETH Zurich in 1979, works tirelessly as an intermediary between business and science to promote the interests of ETH. Grieder, who is Chairman of both the Bühler Group and Givaudan SA, also supports the Future Food Initiative and is involved in developing the Master’s programme in Ghana.

Adrian Weiss completed his degree in architecture at ETH Zurich in 1967 and worked as an architect and engineer for many years. In an individual capacity and through the Adrian Weiss Stiftung, he is personally and financially committed to research and teaching at ETH, particularly in the fields of architecture, electrical engineering and computer science.

His involvement includes supporting talented young people through Excellence Scholarships, supporting up-and-coming young entrepreneurs through Pioneer Fellowships, and creating space for new ideas through the Rector’s Impulse Fund.

In his speech, ETH President Joël Mesot emphasised how much ETH Zurich has to thank these two individuals for; they have been committed and enthusiastic ambassadors and supporters of university for many years and provide important impetus for teaching and research.
