Surface emitting infrared laser for portable gas measuring devices

Quantum cascade lasers can be used to take highly precise measurements of many important gases in the mid-infrared range. There are numerous possible applications ranging from medical diagnostics and environmental sensor technology to industrial process control. Pioneer Fellow David Stark is developing a quantum cascade surface emitting laser (QCSEL) that can be tested against current solutions at wafer level, allowing it to be produced in large volumes more cheaply. Due to its lower electricity consumption, the laser generates less heat, making it suitable for easy integration into portable devices.
