Improving the healing of injured tendons

Tendon injuries and chronic tendon disorders often result in persistent pain and restricted mobility. Rest, pain medication and physiotherapy rarely provide sufficient relief. In cases of severe damage, surgery is often the only remaining option. Although surgery can mechanically stabilise the tendon, it does not reliably promote the natural healing process.

With AVARx, Pioneer Fellow Maja Wolleb is developing an innovative biological approach to improving tendon healing. At its core is an antibody targeting protein, that, according to the team’s research findings, may contribute to a misdirected healing response. By blocking this signal, the treatment is intended to enable tendon tissue to heal more effectively.

During the Pioneer Fellowship, Maja Wolleb will identify suitable antibodies and evaluate their safety and efficacy in preclinical models. This work will lay the foundations for an innovative treatment for tendon injuries.
