Despite modern emergency care, many patients develop heart failure following a heart attack. This is caused not only by the initial damage to the heart muscle, but also by an excessive immune response that can promote chronic inflammation, scarring and loss of function.

With ImmunoSTEM, Pioneer Fellow Jasmin Rettkowski is developing a new therapeutic approach designed to restore balance at the stem cell level without broadly suppressing the immune system. Preclinical studies have shown reduced inflammation and sustained improvements in heart function.

During the Pioneer Fellowship, Jasmin Rettkowski will complete key safety studies and prepare the regulatory pathway for clinical trials, with the long-term aim of establishing a first-in-class therapy.
