Marco Hutter receives Rössler Prize 2024
Marco Hutter, one of the most respected pioneers of robotics, has been awarded this year’s Rössler Prize. ETH Zurich’s most generous research award, worth CHF 200,000, was presented to him by ETH President Joël Mesot and prize donor Max Rössler at the ETH Foundation’s Thanks Giving event.
Hutter’s work on the mobility and autonomy of AI-controlled walking robots has fundamentally changed robotics research and at the same time helped to position ETH Zurich as a world-leading institution in robotics. The award of the Rössler Prize recognizes not only his pioneering scientific achievements, but also the high level that Hutter has reached in the areas of technology transfer, entrepreneurship and community and project initiatives. Hutter has succeeded in “establishing a wide network of cooperation”, explains ETH President Joël Mesot.
The prize winner already has a long history of support from the ETH Foundation: in 2007, Marco Hutter, then still a student, was one of the first Excellence Scholars.
In 2010, thanks to funding from a Pioneer Fellowship, he was able to take his walking robot technology from research to commercial application, which led to the founding of the spin-off ANYbotics. Since then, seven further start-ups have emerged from the group of the energetic ETH professor.
The award for outstanding young ETH professors in the expansion phase of their careers is made possible by a gift from ETH alumnus and ETH Honorary Councillor Dr Max Rössler. It was awarded for the 16th time this year.
