For patients with end-stage heart failure, a heart transplant is the treatment of choice, but donor hearts are in short supply. The only alternative for such patients is mechanical circulatory support, i.e. an implantable mechanical pump.
The aim of the interdisciplinary University Medicine Zurich flagship project “Zurich Heart” is to develop an artificial heart which mimics the human heart so closely that it can one day be implanted instead of a donor organ.
