The World’s Fastest and Smallest Electro-Optic Modulators

The tremendous increase of internet traffic brings current communication infrastructure to its limits. Key elements of this infrastructure are electro-optic modulators that encode electrical signals onto light. In fact, we have reached a point, where these modulators have become a bottleneck in today’s communications.

Rather than relying on conventional optics, their modulator now works with plasmonics. Plasmonics takes advantage of the coupling of light to electrons at a metal surface, thus offering significantly smaller device sizes and higher speeds than conventional solutions. In their startup, they will design, fabricate, test and sell plasmonic modulators for the next generation of optical communication links.
